Recovery from brain injury typically occurs within two years of the injury, but many individuals report ongoing cognitive difficulties following brain injury and illness. Cognitive rehabilitation is offered to increase or support cognitive abilities following brain injury, with an emphasis on achieving functional changes. It is a structured, goal-oriented, collaborative process with clients and, at times, caregivers or family members. Cognitive rehabilitation programming often includes education regarding the brain and cognitive functioning and teaching clients strategies to offset cognitive difficulties.
