How a person reacts to an injury can impact his or her overall recovery. In addition to the physical consequences of injury and the associated recovery needs, athletes may struggle with pressures to quickly return to play, loss of social contacts (e.g., unable to travel or practice with teammates), fear of losing their spot, concerns about the impact of their injury on their future, loss of confidence, fear of reinjury, and so on. Commonly used coping strategies may not be possible (e.g., physical exercise, sport, etc.) and injury-related stressors may exceed an athlete’s current coping abilities. I work with athletes during the recovery and post-recovery phases to support and strengthen mental wellbeing.
